Can someone explain to me how parses work?

I think I get the general gist. I have the client (albeit when I clicked 'go' for live log i dont think it actually recorded anything because nothing was recorded for my naxx25) but I am not really sure how it works still. People can see your 'parses' when they look you up, right? But its only parses you record, or others?
