Is there a way to gear on a minority faction?

Im VERY tempted to play either Alliance on Gehennas or Horde on Firemaw. The only thing that kinda puts me off is that Ill probably never get geared enough? Or is there?BGs are cross servers, right? So spamming BGs for honor and buy gear with honor? Would that be viable?
