Classic Is the population decline really as bad as portrayed?

I haven't played in over half a year and been thinking of coming back to check out the new patch, but I constantly keep seeing posts on reddit, videos on YouTube etc. about how the population is dwindling like crazy, servers are empty, factions more imbalanced than ever, that it's impossible to find groups for things and that even guilds are having a hard time filling up the spots.
